A pretty good collection of Rebus tales。 Some of the stories are a little too easily wrapped up, And Rebus doesn’t seem to have to really work for it or at least not on screen while others are masterfully done。 A couple others still are so short they really hardly count as stories, more vignettes。 But still provides an interesting take on the character and the crime thriller Genre in short form。

This review by the Sunday Times sums up Ian Rankin’s books beautifully “Rebus is a superbly drawn character; matched by the edgy authenticity of the Scottish locale and dialogue”

I thoroughly enjoyed these Rebus storied。 Naturally, some more than others。 There are a lot of stories here, and a lot that might be said about them。 I just want to highlight one story: “Sunday。” This one, to me, was spectacular。 I think it takes more than a really good writer to produce a story lime this。 It also takes something, some feeling or knowledge that I can’t name。 Anyway, that is the one that will stick with me。

Like a shot of whiskey。。。the stories go down smoothly。 Rankin tells a clever tale in short form just as he does in a full novel。

Generally excellent set of Rebus stories, filled with interesting one off characters and smaller scale crimes worthy of the short story format。 Some really memorable characters throughout too。 By their nature, few of these stories reach the depth of the novels, but this is a lovely collection, and totally recommended。

I kept re-reading the short story where Rankin's main character finds a bogus council worker somewhere where he shouldn't be。 I kept re-reading the short story where Rankin's main character finds a bogus council worker somewhere where he shouldn't be。 。。。more

Loved every short story, it was an excellent feast of fiction。

When you realise that this compendium includes the stories in A Good Hanging and Beggar's banquet, and you've read those ones before, this could be a disappointment。But with so many years since I read those stories, it was a pleasure to read Rebus through so many eras。 And there are some cracking short stories in here (Monstrous Trumpet was particularly good, imo)。Even disregarding all that, the book is worth it for the author's essay on his hero's origins and how he himself developed as a write When you realise that this compendium includes the stories in A Good Hanging and Beggar's banquet, and you've read those ones before, this could be a disappointment。But with so many years since I read those stories, it was a pleasure to read Rebus through so many eras。 And there are some cracking short stories in here (Monstrous Trumpet was particularly good, imo)。Even disregarding all that, the book is worth it for the author's essay on his hero's origins and how he himself developed as a writer alone。 。。。more

Although I really like Ian Rankin's novels and love his Rebus character, this collection of short stories doesn't appeal to me。 Of course Rebus is incredibly clever and always works out who the culprit is, but the reader isn't given the time to pick up clues and try to guess。 Writing short stories is a very difficult exercise; so is reading them, sometimes。 Although I really like Ian Rankin's novels and love his Rebus character, this collection of short stories doesn't appeal to me。 Of course Rebus is incredibly clever and always works out who the culprit is, but the reader isn't given the time to pick up clues and try to guess。 Writing short stories is a very difficult exercise; so is reading them, sometimes。 。。。more

A must for all fans of Rebus。

While I did like the stories, the book was too much。 It had so many stories, not in order, so made it less enjoyable to read than one long story。

A last tasteFor fans of Rebus who have read the whole suite, this offers a last taste before being weaned off the addiction by a process of cold turkey。 Excellent selection of snippets covering Rebus' long career and development as a character。 A last tasteFor fans of Rebus who have read the whole suite, this offers a last taste before being weaned off the addiction by a process of cold turkey。 Excellent selection of snippets covering Rebus' long career and development as a character。 。。。more

Great short stories that provide a flavor of both Rebus and Edinburgh。

Great to dip into between the bigger stories。

Short stories。 Most of which I’ve read before in ‘A Good Hanging’ - bit like a compilation record, good to have them all in one place but you know you’ve also got them elsewhere

Collection of short stories featuring Scottish detective inspector John Rebus。 They're fairly standard short mystery pieces, with some of them solved more by lucky coincidence than sleuthing。 Unfortunately (aside from a couple of the later stories), there's not not much room to give Rebus much personality。 I suspect these would be more appreciated by a reader who knows the character from the novels, than someone like me who is meeting him for the first time。 Collection of short stories featuring Scottish detective inspector John Rebus。 They're fairly standard short mystery pieces, with some of them solved more by lucky coincidence than sleuthing。 Unfortunately (aside from a couple of the later stories), there's not not much room to give Rebus much personality。 I suspect these would be more appreciated by a reader who knows the character from the novels, than someone like me who is meeting him for the first time。 。。。more

A great collection of short stories all featuring John Rebus。 Throughout the many stories the reader learns a lot about the main character。 The twists and turns keep the stories interesting。 I haven't read many of Ian Rankins books, but now they're on my list of books to buy。 A great collection of short stories all featuring John Rebus。 Throughout the many stories the reader learns a lot about the main character。 The twists and turns keep the stories interesting。 I haven't read many of Ian Rankins books, but now they're on my list of books to buy。 。。。more
